Breakaways star man "The Dog" kept up his current run of good form hitting 61 to top the Breakaways scoring again, but Breakaways could not win at the Bladen Club like they did in the cup and Puddletown Wanderers won the game by 13 pins, Captain Tony Belt was top for the Wanderers with 60.

Diment top for Imps

Revenge for Marco

Marco Wanderers 484 3CA 472

Marco took revenge for two previous defeats in the league and cup by 3CA to win by 12 pins. A fast start by Marco saw them start with hands of 80 and 82 and a lead of 35 pins. 3CA came back to reduce the lead by 7 pins on the third hand, before another strong hand of 78 pulled Marco 39 pins up and a seemingly comfortable win. However 3CA came back well in the next two hands to reduce the lead to just 15 pins going into the last hand. A last hand of 66 by Marco left a target of 82 for 3CA and after the first three hit 30 between them, the remainder of the team could not find the elusive stick up to stop Marco taking a valuable 2 points. Top score for Marco was Kevin Watson with 77 with good back up from Ian Penny, for 3CA Phil Slade was top score with 67 with Alex James providing good support with 64.

Untouchables triumph

In the top match in Section C second placed Untouchables won away at fourth placed Strimmers on Thursday night.. Untouchables won by 7 pins to move 3 points clear of Strimmers.

Wide Boys swarm the Bees

Colliton Wide Boys 444 Brewers Bees 406

There was no evidence of apiphobia at the Colliton Club last night as the Wide Boys swarmed to a 38 pin victory over Brewers Bees.
Wide Boys took an early lead and were 17 up after two hands. However, on the third hand the Bees won their only hand of the evening which was complements of Paul "Totters" Leneghan who slipped in an OXO resulting in 7 pins being lost. Consistent skittling, with a number of hands in the mid to high 60's, enabled the Wide Boys to restore their pin advantage and eventually extend it to a 38 pin victory.
With only two stick ups and just four scores under 7 (two 6's, a 5 and the OXO) across the Wide Boys team, bottom score was a close run contest but this went to Totters with a score of 51, however he did manage to beat his man by 17 pins!

Skimmers beat Patriots

Patriots 425 Skimmers 460

Fixture books

The oldest fixture book I have in my possession is from season 1952-53 and has Section A on the front of it so I would imagine there my have been a separate one for Section B as I have one the following year and both sections are in it.

These are the nine teams that made up Section A in season 52-53

ANTELOPE HOTEL
BREWERS ARMS
BULLS HEAD
COLLITON CLUB
COMPASSES 'B'
CORNWALL HOTEL
PHOENIX HOTEL
PRINCE OF WALES
R.A.F.A

There were no league tables printed in the following years book so I don't know who won the league, also there were no names of the secretaries or home alleys although most teams were named after the pub or club where they played.
On the front of the book it has the name of the Chairman as W.Neal and Secretary and Treasurer as A.E.Grinter.

If anyone can add anything to this season or has any information about any years before this I would be interested in hearing from you. tgosney@tiscali.co.uk

48 pin win for Untouchables

Birthday boy top score as Breakaways win

Breakaways 460 Dewlish Monsters 441

Half Pint celebrated his 20th birthday hitting 62 and topping the Breakaways scoring charts in their 19 pin win against Dewlish Monsters.
Finding themselves 19 pins down after three hands Breakaways pulled 13 pins on the fourth hand hitting 71, the turning point came on the next hand as Nipper had a flopper and a 73 hand was hit, which Monsters could not match and the Breakaways went into a 14 pin lead. Monsters had a chance to come back on the sixth hand as Breakaways hit a 62 hand but Monsters could only reply with a 60 hand and 2 more pins were pulled in Breakaways favour.
The Dog and Half Pint had stick ups on the last hand to give Breakaways a 69 hand to leave the Monsters a tough task of hitting 86 to win, which was not achieved and the Breakaways won by 19 pins.

Marco win absorbing match

Milborne Woodman 439 Marco Wanderers 441

For the second week running, Marco were involved in an absorbing match which could have gone either teams way until the last throw of the match was made. Marco made a fast start with scores of 65,65,72 and 64 taking them into a 24 pin lead after 4 hands. However a 56 hand opened the door for the Woodman and they responded with an excellent 67 hand to reduce the lead to 13 pins. Marco were able to pull a further 2 pins on the sixth hand and took a healthy lead of 15 pins going into the last hand, but much like last week a failure to secure a stick up in the last hand meant the game was not put out the Woodman's reach, with a target of 73 pins to win set. After a steady start the match seemed to be heading the Woodman's way with consecutive stick ups of 12 and 16 meaning the last three players needed 22 to win. However two sixes left last man A. Lovett needing 10 to win and after punching out the middle to leave a three and a split two, a second ball left the winger and the split two saw Marco breath a sigh of relief as they ended up the winners by the narrowest of margins of 2 pins. Top scorer for Woodman was A. Lovett with 66 and for Marco John Norman with 59.

3CA take the points

3CA 433 Puddletown Wanderers 430

3CA beat Puddletown Wanderers at home by 3 pins to keep their title hopes alive. 3CA captain Malc Slade and Skid top scored for the home side with 58, but top man of the night was Puddletown Wanderers Luke Raines who hit an impressive 65.

Comfortable win for Skimmers

Skimmers 400 Colliton Spares 375

Skimmers started well and were 16 up after two hands. Spares won the third hand to pull 10 pins back, but skimmers had a hand of 66 on the fourth hand to go 20 pins ahead. The next two hands were fairly even but on the last hand Skimmers pulled another 5 pins to win comfortably by 25 pins. Top score for the Skimmers was captain Steve Willsher with 56 while Paul Rogers was top for Spares and highest on the night with 57.

12 pins win for Patriots

Patriots kept up their good form with an away win at bottom side Hammers on Friday night, second placed Patriots won by 12 pins.

Friday, 15 February 2008

Colliton derby won by Wide Boys

Colliton Muckspreaders 419 Colliton Spares 437

The Thursday night Derby at the Colliton Club produced an away win for the Wide Boys. A very consistent performance from the spreaders would have troubled the Wide Boys but for their five stick ups coming in the most timely places to enable pins to be pulled rather than lost. A notable statistic from the Wide Boys individual totals saw a gap of just 5 pins separating seven players. Justin Hallett top scored with 59, second bottom scorer Steve Legg hit 54, with Paul Horwood bringing up the tail on 46.

Up for the cup

This Thursday sees the draw for the quarter finals of the knockout cup, the eight sides in the draw are all from Section A, although Marco Wanderers and Patriots the top two teams in the section are not involved and Brewers Bees another of the top teams are out as well.

These are the eight side left in the competition.

3CA
The highest placed team in the draw, which makes them slight favourites before the draw. 3CA have only lost two homes games this season,

THE IMPS
Last season's cup winners, who are currently fourth in the league, will be hoping for a home draw.

COLLITON WIDE BOYS
On current form are possibly the best side in the draw, home or away they have been playing well.

MILBORNE WOODMAN
Have had a good season and are well on their way to a top half finish, they would fully deserve a place in the semis.

SLINGERS
Have been inconsistent this season, but on their night are a match for anyone, and with "Chan" in their team they have a match winner.

SKIMMERS
Last season's cup runners up, have not had the best of seasons, home form not great but would be a danger to any team if drawn away.

BREAKAWAYS
Possibly one of the outsiders, a home draw could suite them, with the experience of "The Dog" and the youthful " half pint" would not be an easy draw for anyone.

HAMMERS
The bottom team in the section, are making a fight of staying up, have beaten 3CA away this season, would not be taken lightly by any team.

It's hard to say who will go through out of the eight sides, as results have shown this season Section A is very close, but it may be a little clearer after the draw on Thursday.

Bees sting Marco

Marco Wanderers 479 Brewers Bees 481

In what was a match of fluctuating fortunes, the Bees got off to a solid start winning the first hand by 6 pins and followed this up with an excellent 78 hand to stretch their lead to 23 pins after two hands. Having been stung into action, Marco hit back well, with four consecutive hands of over 70 to turn the match on it's head and took a 19 pin lead going into the last leg. However the Bees showed their class and produced a fantastic last hand, with three stick ups on the way to an 81 hand to leave Marco needing 63 to win. A failure to secure a stick up on the last hand cost Marco dear as they fell 2 pins short of the target. For the Bees, Andy Dunford lead the way with an excellent score of 79 with great support from Tony Hewitt with 67 and Dave King with 65. For Marco Pete Bolton lead the way with 67.

Monsters beat 3CA

Dewlish Monsters 409 3CA 406

Dewlish Monsters made it three wins in a row beating third placed 3CA by 3 pins. 3CA started with two 60 hands and were 2 pins up, but for the next three hands they struggled and Monsters took a 22 pin lead. 3CA came back in the last two hands but it was to late and Monsters finished 3 pins in front. "Skids" of 3CA had a night to forget hitting 39 including a score of 1 along the way.

Patriots in 22 pin victory

Patriots 447 Breakaways 425

Patriots kept their title hopes alive with a win against Breakaways. Patriots were well in control of the match finding themselves 29 pins in front after five hands, but it could have changed on the sixth hand as the Patriots struggled to 46 after seven players but anchor man Lee Cooke saved the hand with a stick up of 17 and the Breakaways could only pinch 1 pin. The last hand Patriots again were saved with a stick up this time from Dan Studley as they hit 61, and they finally won by 22 pins.

2 pins the difference as Wide Boys win

Colliton Wide Boys 432 The Imps 430

The non appearance, due to illness of the Wide Boys sticker up James Dunham, and an emergency call out for, "The Pacer" meant that the Wide Boys players had to perform the sticking up duties themselves, this the team felt contributed to a lack of consistent skittling and a team total just below the home average. However the Wide Boys took an early lead, and with the assistance of a 76 on the third hand extended this to 17 pins. But on the sixth hand, still being 17 up, another score of 3 meant that only 56 was scored given The Imps an opportunity to reduce the deficit, which they did with a hand of 69. Chasing 74 to win on the last hand The Imps made an impressive start and a 14 stick up from fifth man Barry Knight resulted in the final two players requiring 18 to win, but the target of 74 eluded to what would have been a worthy fight back, resulting in a loss by only 2 pins. With Andy Fowler getting his first stick up in 12 games and Wide Boys having 5 stick ups to The Imps 3 was the difference to wining this very tight game.

Close win for Slingers

Slingers beat Colliton Muckspreaders by 4 pins at the Trinity Club on Thursday night to record their eighth league win of the season. Spreaders had a great chance to win, needing 53 to win but could only manage a 48 hand.

Goldies Chimps were the only side to beat run away Section B leaders Allsorts in the first half of the season, and last night they beat them again to give Allsorts their second league defeat.

Wanderers stun the Bees

Brewers Bees lost their third game on the trot to Puddletown Wanderers at the Conservative Club last night.

Hammers in last hand win

Hammers 431 Skimmers 425

Hammers continue their battle against the drop with a last hand victory against Skimmers. Hammers were 5 pins down on the first hand but won the next three hands to go 17 pins up, Skimmers came back to win the next two hands to make it all level going into the last hand. Hammers hit 72 on the final hand and Skimmers fell short of the total. Roy Morby was top score for the Skimmers with 67.

Breakaways back in the points

Breakaways got their first league win since November at home to Colliton Spares. Spares were 2 up after the first hand but from there on Breakaways took control with hands of 78, 67 and 72. Spares could only hit 59 on the last hand to leave the Breakaways the small total of 52 to win. The Dog was Breakaways top man again in their 15 pin victory hitting 68.

Imps comeback at Gurkha

The Imps 416 Slingers 411

For four hands Slingers played some of the best skittles seen at the Gurkha this season, with hands of 63, 63, 58, and 64 they went into a 9 pin lead. There were no stick ups in their hands but plenty of 8's and 9's as they played the alley superbly, The Imps throwing first kept setting the Slingers decent targets as they hit 58, 60, 59, 62 saved by Martin Haimes 15 (the only stick up of the night) on the third hand.
The game changed on the fifth hand The Imps again hit a good hand of 64 but this time there was no reply from Slingers as they slumped to their lowest hand of the night hitting 51 putting The Imps 4 pins up. The sixth hand was won by Imps who went into the last hand 7 pins up, on the last hand Imps hit 57 to leave the Slingers 65 to win, Slingers could not get the stick up they needed although there were chances right to the end and the game was won by 5 pins in Imps favour.
Martin Haime was top score for The Imps with 59 while Andy Frampton was top for Slingers with 56.

Top match won by Patriots

3CA 443 Patriots 452

Section A's top match on Friday night was won by the Patriots, the fixture found second placed 3CA hosting third placed Patriots. The Patriots came back from being 24 pins down on the first hand to win the match by 9 pins.

Friday, 1 February 2008

Revenge for Marco

Colliton Muckspreaders 403 Marco Wanderers 426

Marco managed to avenge their home defeat against the 'Spreaders by easing to a 23 pin victory at the Colliton Club last night. On a night where stick ups proved elusive, with only three all night, the fact that these all went the way of Marco proved decisive. The match could have gone either teams way, where after four hands the 'spreaders were leading by 2 pins, however scores of of 66 and 71 on the fifth and six hands gave Marco a lead of 18 pins going into the last hand with the 'Spreaders ending with their worse score of the night with a 52 hand, Marco were able to secure the win with a steady last hand. For the home side M.Richards and J.Simpson top scored with 54 while for Marco Kevin Watson was top with 58.
