Woodmen chop down Marco

Milborne Woodmen 427 Marco Wanderers 424

In a closely fought match, the Woodmen edged out Marco by three pins. Throwing first Marco opened up with a steady 61 leg which the home team responded with what turned out to be their worst score of the night of 53. The second leg saw Marco struggle to 55 and in reply the Woodmen pulled five pins back. The third leg was tied with scores of 59, before Marco hit their best leg of 71 which the Woodmen couldn't’t match but they did hit a solid 62 leg to give the visitors a twelve pin lead. The lead was extended to fifteen in the fifth leg after scores of 62 and 59, but the match was turned on its head in the sixth leg, when Marco could only manage 56. Sensing a chance to get back in the match, the home side grab the opportunity with both hands lead by a stick up from Tony Brown (15) and some solid back up scores they managed to hit 70 and reduce the lead to one pin going into the final leg. A solid if unspectacular last leg of 60 by Marco left the Woodmen a victory target of 62, and after first four players had hit 7,9,3 and 6 it looked like the match was heading the visitors way. However, scores of 8 and 9 left the final pair needing 20 to win and Ady Climo seized the moment by hitting a peach of a first ball for a round eight and held his nerve to convert the stick up and hit a score of 15 to all but seal the victory which the last man duly did to give the Woodmen a well earned victory. Top score for the Woodmen was Tony Brown with an excellent 69 and for Marco Vaughan Penney with 60.

Wide Boys outshine the Imps

The Imps 393 Wide Boys 441

The Wide Boys were in control at the Gurkha Inn from the first hand as they became the first team to beat the Imps this season.
Stick ups from Roy Fowler (14) and J.Dunham (11) gave the visitors a perfect start as they hit a 69 hand, the Imps were nowhere near that total and hit a poor 53 to go 16 down.
A bolter stick up from Justin Hallett gave Wide Boys a 60 hand and the home side a chance, but yet again the Imps were poor and only hit 54 to find themselves 22 pins down.
The third hand was tied as both teams hit 56, while on the third hand Wide Boys could only manage a 54 hand to let the Imps back in , and a 62 hand from the home side put 14 pins between the teams.
At this point it looked liked the game could swing in favour of the Imps, but the Wide Boys struck back with a 72 hand with stick ups from P.Lenaghan (12) and captain Andy Fowler (15) to finally kill of the home side who could only reply with a mediocre hand of 52 to give the visitors 34 pin lead.
Wide Boys drove home their superior scoring with a 73 hand with stick ups from S.Legg (15) and Andy Fowler with another 15, while a stick up from the Imps captain Terry Gosney (14) gave the Imps a 60 hand and Wide Boys a 46 pin lead.
With the match well and truly over the Wide Boys pulled 2 more pins hitting a 57 hand.
The two captains were top score, Andy for the Wide Boys with 62 and Terry for Imps with 61.

Breakaways win again

Brewers Bees 434 Breakaways 443

Breakaways made it three wins out of three in the league with a 9 pin win over Bees at the Conservative Club.
Bees started with a 58 hand which Breakaways beat by 5 hitting 63 with two 11's from 'the painter' and 'half Pint'.
A poor 54 hand from the home team was only just beat by the Wool side who hit 58 to go 9 up.
The Bees came back strong on the third hand with a score of 69 with spares from Dave King (15) and captain Steve James (14), but the visitors matched the hand with a fine 69 themselves with 'Halfy' getting another stick up (12).
On the fourth hand a 16 stick up from Captain Steve James helped the Bees to a 70 hand, this time Breakaways had no reply and hit 61 to tie the match up.
The fifth hand Breakaways won by 1 pin 60 to 61. A 13 stick up from Kev Holbrook saved the sixth hand for the Bees who hit 62, the Wool side took control with a 71 hand with stick ups from Captain Keith Brown (16) and anchor man Clive Williams (13) to go 10 pins in front.
Gus James gave the Bees a great start to the last hand with a 16 stick up but the home side could not build on it and only hit 61 to leave Breakaways an easy task to win the match, a 60 hand gave the Wool side a 9 pin win.
Kev Holbrook was top for the Bees with 65, while Half Pint and the anchor man Clive was top for Breakaways.

Skimmers stop 3CA

3 C A 419 v Skimmers 426

Previously unbeaten in the League 3 C A lost to Skimmers in a low scoring game at Charminster.

3 C A threw first and spirits were high when second man Rich "Beaker" Bird had a flopper with his first ball finishing with a 17 and reaching a hand total of 68. Skimmers were not to be outdone and the hit back with 71 including a 17 from Darryl Burt to take a lead of three. Skimmers extended their lead to 12 in the second hand with stick ups from Matt Burt 12 and Shaun Baker 13.

3 C A pulled back 2 pins on the third hand but should have done better had Phil Slade 12 and Steve Prior 11 capitalised on their stick up chances.

The middle hands saw some very indifferent scoring from 3 C A although one highlight was a flopper from Chilly Childs (15) in the fifth hand !! (Its true) Daryl Burt was again on target for Skimmers in the fifth hand with a second stick up 13.

3 C A went from bad to worse in the sixth hand hitting a meagre 49 but Skimmers were also under performing and could only manage 54 extending their lead to 13.

In the last hand 3 C A could not manage the stick up that might have given them a last gasp chance of snatching victory despite several good chances. Skimmers not hitting the winning pins until last man Derrick Knight threw.

Semi final heartache for Imps

The Imps made it to the semi final of the Blackthorn British Skittles Championship on Saturday. In the first round the Dorchester side beat the New Forresters by 4 pins, it looked as if they were heading out early but the Bridgewater team were unable to reach the target set by Imps.
In the quarter finals against Weston St John the Imps again looked as if they were out, but finished with a big hand to clinch their place in the semi final by four pins.
In the semi final Imps looked as if they were through against Bath City as they went 23 up after 3 hands, and even though they lost the fourth hand they went into the last hand 16 pins up, the format of this match was different than normal as Bath had won the toss and chose to play one player at a time so their top man would throw then Imps top man and so on, and the start of the last hand their first three players all had stick ups to bring the game very close and the Imps could not match their scores and lost by 2.
Bath City went on to win the final and were worthy champions.

Puddletown Wanderers 414 Patriots 460 (Cup 1st round)

In a real one sided game at Bladen Social Club Patriots defeated Puddletown Wanderers in the 1st round of the knockout cup. With Puddletown throwing first they got off to a average start hitting a mere 52. Patriots replied with a respectful 69 A. Fagg hitting A 16. From then on it was all Patriots with only there second hand dipping below 60 and there highest being in the 4th hand hitting a massive 77. In reverse the wanderers never got going hitting,52,64,54,56,60,64,64 all night. With only two players getting anywhere near the form the team is capable of. Patriots ran out deserved winners and move onto 2nd round of cup as for the Wanderers the Plate beckons!

Chimps went 13 pins in front after a 69 hand with Ade Clarke getting a 13 stick up on the first hand.
Imps hit back with stick ups from Terry Gosney(15) and Keith Wyatt (18) to hit a 72 hand, which Chimps could only reply with 53 hand to put Imps 6 up.
Acks had a 17 as Imps hit 71 to go 17 pins in front and the game looked over, but a 55 hand by Imps was beaten by Chimps with a 67 hand with a 17 stick up from captain Brain Kennedy, to leave 6 between the teams.
Chimps pulled 2 more pins on the fifth hand 56 to 58.
With the game only 4 pins the difference Imps hit a 63 hand which Chimps failed to beat hitting 53 to put Imps 14 in front.
Captain Terry Gosney had a 13 stick up on the last hand to help Imps to a 58 hand and 2 more pins were pulled as Imps ran out winning by 16 pins.
Keith Wyatt was top for Imps with 64, while Ade Clarke was top for Chimps hitting 58.

Lee leads Allsorts to victory

Allsorts 479 Marco 466 (Cup 1st round)

In a cracking game of skittles, which edged one teams way then the other, it was Allsorts that came out on top by 13 pins over Marco. After throwing first Allsorts got off to a slow start by setting 60, which Marco replied with a solid 70 leg to take an early lead. However the match turned quickly around with the home team finding their range and hitting legs of 75,77 and 74 with some quality skittles to take a 22 pin lead after four throws. The lowest leg of the night for Allsorts saw them set 58 in the fifth hand and Marco sensing the opportunity to get back into the match came back with a 72 leg to reduce the deficit to 8. Another leg of 72 by Marco replying to a 70 leg by the home team saw the teams enter the last leg with just six pins between them. A solid leg of 65 by Allsorts set Marco 72 to win, however a 4,6,6 start scuppered their chances of victory and they ended with their lowest leg of 58 to hand the Allsorts a well deserved victory. Top score for the home team was anchor man Lee Haime with 66, but the top man on the night was Eric 'Showbiz' McConkey who hit 75 including two floppers.

Alcotops throwing first hit a 50 but this included an oxo. Skimmers scored 59 to take a 9 pin lead. A 14 from S.Warr for Alcotops reduced the lead to 2. The home team increased their lead to 16 in the 3rd, Jeff Brown with a 13. The lead dropped to 4 on the next as Skimmers could only manage 40. In the 5th Alcotops hit 57, D.Warr 15, but Skimmers replied with 61, Steve Willsher 12. Skimmers won the last two hands to run out winners by 16.

Andy Roberts hit 71 as Allsorts won their second game of the season against Plodders at the Bull's Head on Friday night. Darren Langdon was top for Plodders with 57.

Imps get ready for Weston

This coming Saturday Dorchester team The Imps will be hoping to go all the way and win the Blackthorn British Skittles Championship, which is held at the Sand Bay Holiday Village, Weston Super Mare.
They will be competing with 15 other teams to become British Champions, a crown that their Dorchester rivals Skimmers have won twice in the past.
Captain Terry Gosney is well aware of the challenge ahead " Skimmers achieved something special winning it the first two years of the competition, and they like to remind us of their achievement, so now we have a chance to emulate them but I have been to the last two years of the finals and it does not suit double handed players so we will have to be at our very best to win the competition"
The Imps thought they were out when they only finished third in the group stage, but they got through as one of the best third place teams. They then beat Somerset side Merlins over two legs and clinched their place at Weston Super Mare by beating Masters of Bridport home and away.

Slingers followed that with hands of 64, 70 and 66 which gave them a 45 pin lead.
Brewers Bees pulled back 6 pins on the fifth hand and tied the sixth hand, but Slingers pulled another 7 pins on the last hand to give them a 46 pin victory.
Slingers top score was Martin Green with 67, while Tony Hewitt was top for Bees with 53.
The win gave Slingers two wins out of two, but for the Bees it was their third defeat of the season.

Skimmers took a 7 pin lead on the first hand with a 65. Wide Boys responded in the 2nd with 71, spares from Andy Fowler (14) & Justin Hallet (12), to go 4 ahead. The next 3 hands were tied. The home side increased their lead to 7 on the 6th & finished with a 72 hand to win comfortably.

Breakaways took a 3 pin lead on the first hand after a hand of 64 which included a 12 stick up from Jim Bob.
The next hand saw Spares live up to their name as they hit four stick ups, R.Wills (16) Richard Stubbs (13) Andy Aylott (16) and Doug Chalmers (11) which gave them a 88 hand. Zimmer gave Breakaways a good start with 14 but they could not match the Spares and a hand of 66 gave the visitors a 19 pin lead.
A 11 stick up from L.Gatehouse helped Spares to a 67 score on the third hand, but Breakaways bounced back with a 74 hand with stick ups from Pauly Painter (14) and Gribo (13) to pull 7 pins back.
A poor fourth hand of 56 from Spares gave the home side a chance, and they had the perfect start when the top two both had stick ups Zimmer (16) and Jim Bob (14) the rest of the hand was 8's and 9's as a total of 79 was hit to give the Wool side a 11 pin lead.
Doug Chalmers 16 helped Spares to a 68 on the fifth hand and they managed to pull back 8 pins as Breakaways could only hit 60.
Doug was again amongst the stick ups on the sixth hand and his 11 and R.Wills's 12 gave Spares a 69 hand to put the pressure on the home side, but again Zimmer gave Breakaways a great start with a 15 stick up which led to a 75 hand and gave Breakaways a 9 pin lead.
The last hand saw Doug Chalmers claim his fourth stick up of the night as he hit 13, but Spares could only manage a 63 hand to leave Breakaways 54 to win, there were no more stick ups for the Wool side but a hand of 65 gave them a 11 pin victory and two wins out of two.
Not surprisingly Zimmer was top for the home side with 76 and his score was matched by Doug Chalmers of the Spares.

Imps remain unbeaten

Both teams started the match with a steady hand of 57. The only stick ups of the night came on the next hand as Imps hit a 64 hand with stick ups from Terry Gosney (11) and Keith Wyatt (14), Woodman anchor man Andy Lovett had a chance to get close to the home sides total but a stick up bolter gave his team a 55 hand and a 9 pin lead for the Imps.
On the third hand the Gurkha Inn side struggled to a 52 hand, but still managed to pull 2 more pins as Woodman could only hit 50.
Imps best hand of the night a 66 without a stick up proved to be the match winner as they went 23 pins in front. A 60 on the fifth hand from the Imps again pulled pins as the Imps found themselves 35 pins in front.
On the sixth hand Woodman managed to pull 5 pins back as they beat Imps hand of 55 with a 60 hand. Both teams finished the match the way they started tying the hand with 59 each.
Top score for the Imps was Terry Gosney and Keith Wyatt with 56 but it was an all round solid team performance that gave the Imps their third win of the season to keep them unbeaten.
A.Climo was top for the Milborne side with 56 which included four 8's and two 9's.

3 C A maintained their encouraging start to the season with a 13 pin victory away to Dewlish Monsters.

Monsters took an early first hand lead of 6 pins which included a stick up 11 for Sam Crabb. 3 C A recorded a second hand 59 but a reply of only 52 from Monsters gave the lead to 3 C A by a single pin.

The third hand saw the scores all square with 66 for Monsters and 65 for 3 C A. The lead off men on both sides hitting stick ups, Phil Slade for 3 C A with 13 and 15 for Andy Crabb of Monsters.

The game appeared to be slipping away from 3C A in the fourth hand when they could only manage a total of 49, Monsters returned a score of 58 to lead by 9. The final three hands saw good solid skittling for 3 C A with hands of 63, 63 and 66 which proved too much for Monsters.

Andy Crabb top scored for Monsters with 60. Surprise top scorer for 3 C A was Steve "Granville" Prior (58) who had courageously given up his sick bed to turn out. Granville snatching highest score with a last hand 13.

3CA also welcomed back Mike "Biffer" Huxley for his first game of the season following knee surgery in the summer. 3CA can only hope that the medics have done their job and that he will again reproduce the consistent form of previous seasons.

The two teams will meet again at Milborne for the Cup game next Thursday.

Milborne Woodmen 412 - 421 Wide Boys

Throwing first at The Royal Oak Wide Boys hit a solid 61 hand that gave them a 3-pin lead. A reasonable score of 57 followed on the second hand, however Woodmen replied with two stick-ups and a total of 67 to move 7 in front. Wide Boys then hit their worst hand of the game (54) that included three 5's. Unexpectedly Woodmen hit their worst hand (47) of the game as well to leave the game all square after 3 hands.

Buoyed by pulling pins on the previous hand Wide Boys then hit their only 2 stick-ups of the evening on the fourth and fifth hands that helped them to scores of 64 and 65 respectively. In complete contrast to their third hand Woodmen pulled 4 pins on Wide Boys 64 by hitting 68, and followed it with a 59 to leave Wide Boys 2 up. On the sixth hand Wide Boys hit a 56 that Woodmen could only beat by 1 pin to trail by just 1 going into the last hand.

Wide Boys then hit their most consistent hand of the night, a 64 without a stick-up, that left Woodmen 66 to win. They were always struggling to reach this target after hitting three 6's in a row and eventually finished with 56 to give Wide Boys a 9-pin victory.

Both teams started slowly, Monsters taking a 1 pin lead with 52. An improvement in the 2nd saw both sides hitting 58. The 3rd hand Monsters, throwing first, could only manage 43. Skimmers replied with 59 to take a 15 pin lead. The home team increased their lead to 37 in the 5th with a hand of 65 ( 12 from Derek Burt) as Monsters could only manage 46. The lead was reduced to 29 on the 6th with Monsters 62 (14 for Simon Ross) to Skimmers 54 (12 for Sean Baker). Two more pins were gained on the final hand as Skimmers won by 31.

All Sorts threw first recording a hand total of 57. 3 C A looked to be heading for a similar score but inform captain Malc "Slinky" Slade had other ideas and with a first ball "flopper" hit 17 to give 3 C A a lead of 11.

All Sorts had a great chance to hit back in the second hand with stick ups for Lee Claridge (10) and Lee Haime (12) but both players failed to get the big scores they would have hoped.

For the second week running 3 C A saw the return of an "old boy" in Martin "Olly" Holbrook and he soon made his presence felt hitting 15 on the second hand and helping to extend the 3 C A lead to 17.

The third hand saw 3 C A increase their lead by just one pin and the fourth by a further 6 pins helped by a Rob Smith 10. Olly Holbrook recorded a further stick up 13 in the fifth hand causing the team to think that Slinky would not be adding to the holiday fund this week but needless to say he had other plans and came back with 13 in the sixth hand. All Sorts countered with a 14 from A Fulbrook in the fifth hand but a poor sixth hand 54 meant that 3 C A led by 32 going into the last hand.

All Sorts ended the game with a very good 77 with stick ups for Martin "Mostin" Murray 16 and Darren Palmer 14. 3 C A replied with 68 including a 15 for Phil Slade to record a second win of the season by 23 pins.

Keith Wyatt finished with three stick ups to swing the match in the favour of the Imps after they found themselves 25 pins behind at the Goldies on Thursday night.
Both sides had a poor start with Imps beating Patriots hand of 60 by 1 pin.
Patriots second hand included four stick ups, B.Kimber (17) Daz Studley (15) Wayne Goff (12) and Lee Cooke (12) as they hit a massive score 0f 85, the Imps had no reply to the home sides impressive hand and could only hit a poor 59 hand to go 25 pins behind.
A 16 stick up from T.Macey helped Patriots to a 69 hand, but this time the Imps faired better with Stick ups from Kev Diment (14) and Barry Knight (11) helping them to a 72 hand which pulled them 3 pins back.
The Goldies side were again amongst the stick ups on the fourth hand with Studley (12) and Goff (16) again the danger men as their team hit 70, Phil Goodland gave the Imps a good start with a 12 stick up but the Imps were unable to get another and finished with a 67 hand to go back to 25 down.
A poor hand of 60 by Patriots gave the visitors a chance on the fifth hand and with stick ups from Barry Gosney(15) and Keith Wyatt (12) the Imps hit 76 to pull 16 pins and leave 9 pins between the teams.
A 14 stick up on the sixth hand from anchor man Lee Cooke gave patriots a 68 hand, but the Imps were now getting stick ups and two more from Mark Ackerman (15) and Keith Wyatt (16) gave Imps another 76 hand and a 1 pin lead.
Patriots could not get a stick up on the last hand and scored 60 for the third time of the match to leave Imps just 60 to win. Three 8's and a 9 from the top half gave them a perfect start and when Barry Knight got his second stick up of the night the game looked over, but Baz boltered his last ball and sixth man Martin Haime got a 4 to leave the bottom two 8's to win, but the pressure was taking off the anchor man when man of the match Keith Wyatt hit a 14 stick up to leave Terry Gosney 2 to win, and an 8 gave the Imps a 7 pin victory.
Keith Wyatt was top for Imps with 73 while for the Patriots Lee Cooke hit 67.

A 13 stick up from Lee Claridge gave the Allsorts a good start and a hand of 68 was hit, and Skimmers lost 6 pins hitting a 62 hand in which Daryl Burt had 15 stick up.

Allsorts moved in front on the third with a 67 hand to which Skimmers could only reply with a 56 hand to leave the home side 6 pins up.

Allsorts fourth hand was a poor 56 and Skimmers stormed back in front with a 70 hand led by Captain Steve Willsher who had a 14 stick up as his team went 8 pins in front.

Allsorts picked themselves back up on the fifth hand and hit 73 with two 14 stick ups from A.Travers and Martin Murray. Skimmers replied well with 8's and 9's until anchor man Derrick Knight had a 3 which left Skimmers with a 61 hand to leave Allsorts 4 pins in front.

The Bull's Head side again scored high on the sixth hand with a total of 69, but a 15 stick up from Derek Burt kept the visitors in the match as they hit a 66 hand to leave 7 pins between the sides.
Martin Murray again hit a stick up (13) to help Allsorts to a 64 hand to leave Skimmers 72 to win. The first 7 players for Skimmers could not get the stick up they needed and anchor man Derrick Knight was left needing 18 to tie the game and he got his stick up but was unable to get the flopper which would have got his side a point scoring a 15 to leave Allsorts with a 3 pin victory.
Martin Murray was top for Allsorts with 67, while Sean Baker and Derek Burt both hit 63 for the Skimmers.

Breakaways come back to win

Breakaways 445 Plodders 435

Plodders started life in Section A with a 71 hand and a 9 pin lead, and although they were only hitting hands of 60 and 61 they managed to keep their lead until the sixth hand as Breakaways could not find the stick ups to get in front.

But the sixth hand saw the Wool side play to their normal standard and with stick ups from Zimmer (15) and anchor man Clive Williams (15) they hit 77 to go 14 up and turn the game in their favour.

Plodders finished with a 64 hand to leave the home side 51 to win, Breakaways could not match the sixth hand but managed to win the game by 10 pins hitting a 60 hand.

Zimmer was top score for Breakaways with an impressive score of 68, M.Hellin was top for Plodders with 66.

Marco edge a classic

Marco Wanderers 472 Colliton Spares 470

Marco started their defence of the Section A title, with a hard fought two pin victory over the Collition Spares. Both teams showed rustiness in the first leg with scores of 55 to 58 giving the Spares a small advantage. The second leg saw both teams up their games with stick ups from Ian Penney (16) and skipper Chay Fox (15) leading Marco to a 71 leg. In reply a solid leg of 69 aided by Andy Aylott 14 left the Spares one up. A poor third leg of 57 by the home side opened the door for the Spares who again hit 69 with Andy hitting his second stick up of 15 to leave his side thirteen up. The fourth leg saw the Spares increase their advantage to fifteen pins after scores of 65 to 67. With the home side up against it they responded with an 80 leg with stick ups from Pete Bolton (15), Pogo (10) and Vaughan Penney (16) leading the way, however sensing they had a good chance of a victory the Spares hit back with a fine 72 leg with Doug Chalmers (15) and excellent back up scoring leaving them still seven pins up. Another big leg was needed by Marco, and helped by Pogo hitting the first 'flopper' of the season to record an 18, and Vaughan hitting his second stick up (14), they were able to put up a 78 leg to put further pressure on the visitors. The failure to record a stick up in the sixth leg proved costly for the Spares as they could only muster 58 and with it the match turned around with Marco now 13 up going into the last leg. The home side were looking for a big leg to secure victory but despite chances they could not muster a stick up themselves, but with solid scoring down the line a score of 66 was hit to leave the Spares 80 to win. After a 6,7,7 start Marco were beginning to think the match was their's, however Spares skipper Dave Trevett had other ideas and hit a flopper on his first ball on his way to a 17, and after Doug (15) hit his second stick up on the night, the last two players needed 18 to win. Try as the might the pins didn't fall kindly from their first balls and after recording 8 a piece, the win went to Marco by the narrowest of margins. Top score for Marco was Vaughan Penney 70 and for the Spares Doug Chalmers also hit 70.

Bees stung by Imps

The Imps 439 Brewers Bees 395

After qualifying for the finals of the Blackthorn British Skittle Championship the Imps were on a high, but a very disappointing first hand of 52 brought them back down to reality, and Brewers Bees took full advantage hitting a 66 hand with spares from Andy Dunford (13) and Tony Hewitt (11) to go 14 pins in front.
The Imps rallied together on the second hand to hit 63, while Bees struggled to a 48 hand, and the lead swung in Imps favour and they led by 1 pin. The home side managed 61 on the third hand, but when Gus James started with a 13 stick up it looked as if the Bees were again going to take control of the match, but they were unable to build on the start and tied the hand with 61.
Barry Gosney had a 13 stick up on the fourth hand as the Imps hit 65, but Bees kept in touch with a 60 hand to leave 6 pins between the teams.
The fifth hand was where the match was won as the Imps hit a 72 hand with stick ups from Terry Gosney (13) and Keith Wyatt (15) and Bees could only reply with a 54 hand to give the home side a 24 pin lead.
Four more pins were pulled by the Imps on the sixth hand 59 to a 55 hand. The Gurkha side finished strong with a 67 hand with another stick up from captain Terry Gosney (15) and with the game over the visitors finished with 51 to give the Imps a 44 pin victory.
Terry Gosney was top score with 67 while Keith Wyatt hit 64 and for the Bees Kev Holbrook was top score with 56.

Puddletown Wanderers 409 v 3CA 469

This first game of the season saw the awaited return of the one and only Andrew "Chilly" Childs whatever his skittling skills he certainly adds to the 3CA noise level!

Puddletown Wanderers took a first hand lead of 3 pins thanks to a stick up 12 by last man Tony Belt. Two 15s by Phil Slade and Rob Smith in the second hand resulted in a lead of 10 for 3CA. Solid skittling in the third hand of 8s & 9s culminating with a 16 from captain Malcolm Slade gave 3CA a hand total of 74 and an overall lead of 26 pins.

Further stick ups for Phil Slade (12) in the fourth hand and Steve Prior (11) in the sixth saw 3CA go into the last hand 46 pins in front despite a spirited sixth hand rally by the Wanderers who hit 65 (Martin Tucker 12 and Luke Rainey 11) they still failed to reduce the 3CA lead.

A last hand 14 from Malcolm Slade gave him the highest score (70) and an opportunity to start saving for the next cruise!!!

Luke Rainey 59 was highest scorer for Puddletown Wanderers.

Wide Boys 436 - 438 Dewlish Monsters

Throwing first Wide Boys began the new season with a steady hand of 61 to lead by 2 pins. They followed this with two consecutive hands of 66, compared to Monsters less consistent hands of 72 and 53 to give them a lead of 9. On the fourth hand Wide Boys hit their only hand of the night below sixty (58) that Monsters beat by just a single pin. Monsters then pulled another 2 pins with a hand of 62 to leave Wide Boys 6 pins in front. The turning point of the match then came in the sixth hand when Wide Boys hit another solid hand of 60 but Monsters managed to hit three stick-ups in the single hand that led to a total of 79 and a 13 pin lead. With the game virtually lost Wide Boys couldn't find a stick-up on the last hand but still managed a very creditable 65 to leave Monsters requiring just 53 to win. A 13 pin stick-up from Monsters second man looked to have sealed the win until their next four players hit 7 - 4 - 5 - 7 to leave their bottom two needing 11 between them. Their penultimate player could only manage a 6 to leave Rod Chutter needing 5 to win which he managed with two balls and a winning margin of just 2 pins.
For the Wide Boys it was the fourth season in a row that they lost their first game.

The Masters 327 The Imps 334

Dorchester skittle side The Imps have qualified for the grand finals of the Blackthorn British Skittles Championship at Weston Super Mare on Saturday 20th September.

After winning the 1st leg by 46 pins the Imps were always favourites to go through but still had six more hands to throw to make certain.

Throwing first the Imps hit 56 at the West Bay Hotel, but were 1 down as Masters hit 57. A hand of 55 by Imps was not matched as the Bridport side managed only 50 to give the county town side a 4 pin lead. The Imps pulled six more pins on the third hand hitting 58 to Masters 52.

The fourth hand was tied 56 each, and masters pinched 2 pins on the fifth hand 56 to 54. Imps finished with 55 and Masters gained 1 more pin with a 56 hand as the Imps won the match by 7 pins and the two legs by 53 pins to reach the grand finals.

Imps captain Terry Gosney was top score with 49 , while Nick Tett was top for the home side with 46.

Imps captain was pleased with his team performance " we struggled through the group stages and maybe were a bit lucky but all my players have been brilliant in the knock out stages and we hope to carry on our form into the finals"

The grand finals take place at the Sand Bay Holiday Village, Weston Super Mare on Saturday 20th September 2008.

Section A fixtures

The first match in Section A takes place at the Colliton Club on Thursday night where one of last seasons most consistent sides the Wide Boys take on Dewlish Monsters. The rest of the matches are on Friday, reigning Section A champions Marco Wanderers host Colliton Spares at the Greyhound. The top match takes place at the Gurkha Inn where two sides who will be hoping to challenge Marco meet as The Imps take on Brewers Bees in what should be a noisy encounter. Last seasons runner ups Patriots play away to Milborne Woodman, 3CA another team who should be challenging play away to Puddletown Wanderers. Plodders who were promoted from Section B face a tough match away to Section A stalwarts Breakaways. The most interesting match of the week takes place at the Bull's Head where Section B champions Allsorts make a welcome return to the top section and play Skimmers who are one of the best away teams in the section and a team total of 500 could happen there. Slingers for a second season running have a bye in the first week.

There are two matches on Thursday night, at the Trinity Club Section C champions Tinklers play Vic Jokers while at the Colliton Club Colliton Flingers play the Chimps. The top match in the section takes place on Friday at the Trinity Club when both teams relegated from Section A Hammers and Colliton Muckspreaders play each other. Vic Reeves promoted from Section C play home to Supertramps on Friday. The other Friday games sees Villains at home to Old Spice Yokels, Colliton 'A' at home to Alcotops and Hotshots at home to Heathens. Barmy Army have their bye.

The two relegated teams from Section B both have home games on Thursday Unpredictables home to Swan Abbots and Steamers home to Strimmers, also on Thursday Swankers play Country Boys at the Goldies. Friday night sees last seasons promoted teams in action as Section D champions Brewers Wurzels host Untouchables, while Bull's Headliners play away to Westerners. The season kicks off this week and the first match takes place at the Conservative Club on Tuesday when Casuals play Huntsmen. There are two games at the Colliton Club on Wednesday night Colliton Scorpions host Funseekers while Colliton Thatchers host Gunslingers (formally Worthington Casuals). Two new teams play each other on Thursday night at the Trinity Club when Trinity Tankers take on Chalclyffe Chuckers, also on Thursday Upwey side Ship Wrecked play Gophers. On Friday the third new team Colliton Collisions play away to Puddletown Nomads. Hopefuls and Fisherman have their byes this week.

Management fail at last hurdle

Dorchester mixed side the Management failed to qualify for the grand finals of the Blackthorn British Championship after losing their 2nd leg match away to Bath side Our Gang by 27 pins.
It was always going to be a tough task after the Management only managed to win the 1st leg by 2 pins.
The Management found it hard to adapt to the Bath alley which did not suit double handed players as the balls were small and rubber, which the home side bounced when throwing them, while the pins were plastic and small.
But after a poor start they did manage to get back into the match but after a poor fifth hand by the visitors the game was over.
Martin Gifford was top score for the Management, while Mel Gosney plucked a flopper out of somewhere on the fourth hand.
Amazingly with the big gaps and small balls there were no oxo's, although there were some low scores the lowest being a 1 from Wendy Burt.

The Imps will take a 46 pin lead when they play away to the Masters at the West Bay Hotel next Wednesday in the Blackthorn British Championship.
Throwing first at the Conservative Club on Thursday night The Imps hit a 61 hand, and the Masters hit 59 to give the home side a 2 pin lead.
The second hand Phil Slade had a 15 stick up for the home side as they hit a 66 hand, while the Bridport side could only manage 55 to put the Imps 13 pins in front.
The Imps struggled on the third hand to a 53 hand and the Masters responded with a excellent 65 hand with out a stick up to leave 1 pin between the teams.
The county town side came back strong with star man Phil Slade again getting a stick up(13) and captain Terry Gosney also hit 13 as the Imps scored a 77 hand, and a 57 hand from the visitors put the Imps back in control with a 21 pin lead.
The Imps skittled well on the fifth hand and hit a 65 hand and gained another 6 pins as the Masters hit 59.
A 14 stick up on the last hand from Martin Haime gave the Imps a 69 hand while the Masters struggled to their worst hand of the night and only hit 50 to give the Imps a big lead.
Phil Slade was top for the Imps with 59 while Martin Haime hit 57, for the Masters Martin Horton hit 47.

Management take 2 pin lead to Bath

Dorchester mixed side the Management will take a slim 2 pin advantage when they travel to Bath next Friday to play Our Gang in the Blackthorn British Skittles Championship.
The host had a great start to the match when first man Phil Slade started with a 13 stick up and a 66 hand was hit, the Bath side hit 55 to give the Management a 11 pin lead. The next hand both teams hit 59, while the home side hit 61 on the third and that was with a 16 stick up from Martin Gifford, but the visitors struggled to 49 and the county town side were 23 pins up and looking in control of the match.
The Bath side managed to pull 6 pins on the fourth hand as they hit 58, but it was the fifth hand that brought them right back into the match as the Management again struggled and only hit 53, while the visitors went on and hit a 67 hand with a 15 stick up from Keith Eddy, to leave the difference between the two teams to just 3 pins.
Management hit 58 on the last hand and again Our Gang beat the hand hitting 59 to leave them favourites to go through trailing by just 2 pins.
Phil Slade from the Management was top score on the night hitting 51, while for the visitors Keith Eddy and Terry Adams both hit 47.
The winners from this tie will qualify for the grand finals at Sand Bay Holiday Village, Weston Super Mare on Saturday 20th September 2008.

Barbarians 369 Puddletown Imps 361

Both Dewlish Monsters and the Imps lost in the semi final of the Wonston Club knock out at Hazelbury Bryan. Dewlish Monsters lost to Avengers after an extra hand on Wednesday night, while the Imps lost by 8 to Barbarians.
The Imps found themselves 23 behind after Barbarians started with a 79 hand, but by the fourth hand Imps had pulled it back to 10 pins. The fifth hand though proved to be the Imps downfall as they struggled to a 49 hand, and that included a 15 stick up from Keith Wyatt. Luckily for the Imps Barbarians themselves struggled and only pulled 2 pins.
The Imps needing a big hand could not get the stick ups they needed on the last hand and Barbarians were never in danger of losing.
Keith Wyatt was top for the Imps with 53 with Barry Gosney second with 50.

Gurkha Inn side The Imps won the Nomination Cup last night at the Trinity Club. In the semi final the Imps beat New Strugglers by 99 pins 306-207, while the other semi final was much closer with Wide Boys beating Brewers Bees by 2 pins 289-287. In the final the Imps got in front of their Section A rivals and never looked liked losing the match winning by 20 pins 315-295, Martin Haime of the Imps hit the highest score of the night with a fine score of 70 in the final.

The Imps made it through to the last four at the Wonston Club, Hazelbury Bryan with a 57 pin victory over ladies side Cherry Bees.
The Imps were 23 up after two hands, and were 41 up after four hands of this six hand match.
Top score for the Imps was Martin Haime with 58, while Keith Wyatt hit 55.
The Imps now face a tough match in the semi final against Sturminster Newton side the Barbarians, while in the other semi final Dewlish Monsters play Avengers.

Dorchester side The Imps travelled to Somerset on Saturday night to defend their 32 pin lead from the 1st leg of their match against Merlins from the Half Moon, Horsington.
The Imps won the toss and decided to throw first, but that looked like being a mistake as they went on to only hit a 47 hand, and the home side took full advantage of the poor hand when they hit a 65 hand with a 13 stick up from N.Phillips to go 18 up on the night and take a big chunk out of the Imps 1st leg lead.
The Imps improved on the second hand to hit a steady score of 59, while the home side could only hit 57, to put 16 pins between the teams.
The Dorset side sprung into action on the third hand with stick ups from Barry Gosney (16) and Martin Murray (14) to total a hand of 75, but the home side came back strong with seven 8's and a 13 stick up from anchor man G.Mitchell to score a 69 hand which meant they only lost 6 pins to make the difference on the night 10 pins.
The fourth hand the Imps slipped back into the 50's with a 57 hand, while Merlins hit 65 with another stick up for Phillips (11) to go 18 up and now they only trailed the Imps by 14 pins over the two legs.
The Imps now needed to finish the last two hands with decent scores to keep in front, and lead of man Phil Goodland gave them the perfect start on the fifth hand with a 15 stick up and the county town team hit a hand of 65 to which the home side could only reply with a 61 hand to put 14 pins between the teams on the night.
Goodland again started with a 15 stick up on the last hand, and the Imps finished strongly hitting a hand of 69 to leave the Somerset side a tough task of needing a 88 hand to go through, a hand of 69 with Mitchell again having a stick up (16) was enough to win the match on the night for Merlins but it was the Imps who went through winning the two legged match by 18 pins.
Phil Goodland was top for the visitors hitting 57, while Merlins anchor man Mitchell was the star of the night hitting 61.
The Imps now face a tough match against Masters from Bridport in another two legged match with the winners going through to the grand finals at Sand Bay Holiday Village, Weston Super Mare on Saturday 20th September.

After losing the 1st leg at home by 9 pins Breakaways were looking for a good start at the Chapelhay against Motley Crew, and after three hands the visitors were looking good with a 21 pin lead, but the home side came back and although Breakaways went into the last hand 9 pins up a 66 hand by the Crew was to many for the Wool side to beat and the match was tied, and the 9 pins from the 1st leg was enough to take the Weymouth side through to face Crewkerne side Disney in the final knock out stage. Skid was top for the Crew with 58, while Pauly Painter was top for Breakaways with 55.

Dorchester side The Imps beat Merlins at the Conservative Club on Thursday night to take a 32 pin lead into next weeks 2nd leg game at Horsington, Somerset.
The Imps started with a 59 hand with Mark Ackerman getting a 14 stick up, but the visitors from Somerset hit back with a 65 hand to go 6 up. Ackerman again hit a stick up on the second hand and the home side hit a hand of 69, Merlins again played well with K.Burpitt hitting his second stick up of the night as his side hit 63 to tie the match up.
The third hand saw the Imps skittle well and with a big 17 stick up from Martin Haime took their hand total to 73, Merlins skittled steady to a 60 hand to put the Imps 13 pins in front. The fourth hand put the Dorset team in control as they hit a hand of 65 and Merlins could only reply with a 54 hand to give the Imps a lead of 24 pins.
With the game looking over the home side put in a poor hand of 58 to give the Somerset lads a chance, and Merlins took it to come back into the match hitting a hand of 67 with lead off man A.Tyling having a 14 stick up and star man Burpitt chipped in with a 10 stick up to bring the difference between the two teams down to 15 pins.
On the last hand the Imps were heading for a average hand until seventh man Keith Wyatt had a flopper and got 16 and the Imps finished with a hand of 71 to leave Merlins needing 87 to win. With the second leg to play at their home alley on 2nd August Merlins were looking at keeping the difference between the two teams down to a minimum, but a poor hand of 54 gave the Imps a 32 pin victory and a good lead to defend on their trip to Somerset.
Top score for the Imps was the impressive Mark Ackerman who hit 59, while K.Burpitt went 2 better for the visitors hitting 61.

Monsters Oaks beat Motley Crew on Friday night to leave the Management needing to beat Motley Crew on Saturday night to top the group, but the Management were behind from the start and were never in it as the home side played their best match of this years competition. Monster Oaks are now through to the grand finals while the Management are into a play off.

I reported last month that Vic Jokers had beaten New Strugglers in the Nomination Cup but I found out last night that in fact New Strugglers had won the match. Apparently Jokers were winning going into the last hand but Strugglers managed to tie the game and win it on the extra hand.

Wide Boys were in front all night, they were 19 up after 3 hands, 3CA got it back to just 4 after 5 hands and then Wide Boys managed to finish with hands of 48 and 49 to end up winning by 28. Steve Legg top scored with 60 and Paul Lenaghan hit 59 too.

The Imps 278 Skimmers 273

The Imps beat rivals Skimmers by 5 pins at the Gurkha Inn last night to make it to the semi finals of the Nomination Cup.
Neither team started well, Imps hit 37 on the first hand which Skimmers beat by 1, then on the second had Imps got the pin back hitting 41.
Imps third hand was the only really good hand of the night, as they hit 48 with some consistent skittling while Skimmers hit 37 to give the Imps a 11 pin lead.
The fourth hand was tied with both teams hitting 41, while on the fifth hand Skimmers got 4 pins back with a 41 hand to the Imps hand of 37.
The Imps hit the lowest hand of the night on the sixth hand, struggling to a score of 32, the Skimmers now had a big chance to take the lead, and lead off man Steve Willsher gave them a good start with a 9, but it was left to anchor man Derrick Knight to save the hand and his 9 gave them a 35 hand to leave Imps only 4 pins in front.
Imps finished with a 42 hand, but Skimmers never looked like getting their target of 47 to win the game and finished with 41.
Terry Gosney and Barry Knight was top score for the Imps both hitting 53, while Darryl Burt was top for Skimmers hitting 50.

The Imps take on Merlins from Horsington, Somerset in the 1st knock out round of the British Blackthorn Skittles Championships. The home leg takes place at the Conservative Club on Thursday 24th July, while the Imps travel to Somerset for the away leg on Saturday 2nd August.
Tomorrow night sees a Gurkha Inn derby when The Imps take on Skimmers in the 2nd round of the Nomination Cup.

Drochester mixed side lost their first match of this years competition, when they lost to Monster Oaks on Thursday night at the Vic. Both sides are now on 7 points with one game to play, Monster Oaks visit Motley Crew on Friday 18th July, while the next night sees the Management play away to Motley Crew. If both teams win then whoever has the best pin difference will win the group while the runners up will go into a play off.

Imps nail blackthorn spot

After losing their first four group matches of this years British Blackthorn Skittle Championship the Imps looked to be heading out of the competition, but after winning their last two matches against Dewlish Monsters they put themselves in with a chance of going through as one of the best third place teams, and when Skimmers and Admiral Hood lost their last group games the Imps gained an unlikely passage into the knock out round where they will meet Merlins from Horsington, Somerset. Imps captain Terry Gosney was pleasantly surprised " I never really gave a thought to us going through as one of the third best placed teams and was already resound to going out, so we are pleased to have another chance at this years competition"

The Imps won at Hazelbury Bryan in the Wonston Club knockout cup preliminary round against Stour Lions on Thursday night. Throwing first the Imps started well and got into a big lead after hitting over 80 on the second hand, and won by 45 pins in this six hand match. Top score for the Imps was Mostyn with 59, while Alan Knight hit 56 and Jeff Brown 55.
